Encouraging A Young College Student To Cook Well

Spread the love

College students that choose to live on-campus and away from home for a while will often have a great deal of new adult responsibility to deal with. Many new lessons will come their way at this time, from meeting new people to fitting into the social life and study necessities surrounding them.

However, while students may or may not be well-adapted to this already, it’s important to note that personal standards and self-care is more important than ever, and must be a familiar process before heading away. Often, students can find themselves subsisting on less-than-nutritious foods, quick snacks, takeout  and more. After all, they may have many responsibilities to deal with in a given day.

That said, there’s always time to cook or prepare a decent meal each day, and giving our children the tools to craft them will mean their physical, mental and even spiritual health will be much more robust while living away from home. It may even directly influence their ability to attain better grades, as if you eat well, you can think more easily. Moreover, learning the basics of good cooking saves you money in the long run.

In this post, we’ll discuss a few values and considerations to teach our children before they head off:

Show Them The Versatility Of Recipes

It’s easy for anyone to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of cooking techniques, recipes, and combinations you could potentially use to craft a meal. That said, showcasing how simple but versatile meals can help them craft fantastic food in a pinch will help them understand that cooking is often about fun, and making what you have work. For instance, this delicious Dorito casserole recipe should emphasize that like nothing else, and can be a fun way to teach cooking techniques to your teenager.

A Simple Cooking Tool

It’s good to offer them simple cooking tools they can use to make proper meals without having to mother a stove constantly if they haven’t the time. For instance, a worthwhile slow cooker can make a tremendous difference in helping them cook proteins and creating stews, allowing them to focus on their studies while the beautiful aromas of root vegetables and stock make their way throughout the apartment. Tools like this make cooking easier to handle, but still give great results.

Meal Preparation

There are some times where your teenager will feel as though proper cooking isn’t something they have time for. This is why showing them the benefits of meal preparation can be so worthwhile, as it allows them to craft beautiful meals in one cooking session, freeze them, and microwave or thaw them when appropriate. This helps them continue to eat healthy without overspending. In fact, cooking in a big batch can save them money over time, allowing them to feel as though spending time in the kitchen doesn’t have to be a chore.

With this advice, you’re certain to encourage a young college student to cook well, and they’re certain to enjoy the benefits.
