As a means of living, becoming a chef can be one of the most rewarding professions out there. The food industry is ever-growing, and as such, more and more people find themselves wanting to become chefs.
Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why you should consider becoming a chef:
Authority and Responsibility
If you’re thinking about becoming a chef, then it has probably crossed your mind that if you don’t do things right or meet expectations, then there could be dire consequences. Not only will this apply to your work but also to anything outside of work involving food – for example, sous vide cooking – where others may not know what they are doing, so the responsibility will fall on your shoulders to them with safe food. This can be a great motivator to work harder and improve your skills.
There’s no employer out there that doesn’t appreciate a good employee, right? Sure they may differ from person to person, but if you show them that you’re willing to learn and take on responsibility, then you’ll find yourself being rewarded for it. In most cases, chefs are given a fair degree of flexibility when it comes to planning their day – the only thing stopping them from doing what they want is themselves! This means that although there will be objectives set at the beginning of each month, these can change as per needs, so if they need someone to leave or come in early/stay late, then chances are they won’t say no provided it’s reasonable.
Getting Paid to Eat!
Most of us can think of something we would like to do and then get paid for doing it – there’s nothing wrong with that, right? Well, you can do exactly that as a chef – provided you’re good at what you’re doing. Imagine your boss telling you:”Chef, try these double chocolate chip cookies! We should add it to the menu.”
If you’re able to show superiors that you’re interested in learning and developing your skill set, then chances are they’ll provide the financial support required because ultimately, this leads to better food which leads to happier customers.
Never Be Bored!
If there’s one thing all chefs agree on, it’s the fact that cooking is never boring – not only will you learn new recipes, tweak old ones and make sauces, but there is always something coming up and something going on around you. One week you could be cooking for a high-level meeting at the White House, then the next, you’ll be doing something to impress your significant other, and if that’s not enough, there are always festivals to work at and competitions to think about.
Decent Pay, Lots of Fun!
When people think about chefs, they think about French men in tall white hats or Gordon Ramsay yelling obscenities because it’s entertaining – either way, it doesn’t give justice to what a chef really is: someone who cooks food. Although it can be stressful and come with lots of responsibility, this also means there are lots of opportunities to have fun along the way! There is always an event happening or some competition you can go along too so even though financially it may not be the best option; you’ll never be short on fun.
And if that’s not enough to convince you, then consider this: chefs are in demand! According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, “employment of chefs and head cooks is expected to increase by 8 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations.” There’s no time like now to become a chef, so what are you waiting for?
