Don’t Leave Knives In Sink Water
Knives are certainly one of the most dangerous things to use in the kitchen, but they’re also the most common when cooking or baking. When they’re brand new, knives can be exceptionally sharp and if looked after with a knife sharpener, they can continue to be sharp to the touch. A lot of people, when cleaning up their dishes will just throw everything they’ve used into the water. Now that might be fine for most things, but putting your knives in soapy water should be an absolute no-no. Think about it, you’ve got soapy water which isn’t clear to see through and sharp objects that might be lodged somewhere between other dishes and therefore sticking upwards. Quickly throwing your hands into the water and landing on a kitchen knife might mean a trip to A&E. So as a warning, never leave your knives in sink water. Always keep them off to the side to clean by hand and out of the sink.
Keep Anything Loose And Dangly Away

Turn Pot Handles Away From You
Pot handles can often be waiting to cause damage to yourself or the kitchen, and you don’t have to be clumsy to do it. As this area then tends to be for you walking back and forth, it only takes a rouge hand movement to knock the pot handle and send the contents flying onto the floor or to you. And when that’s burning hot liquid, this spells disaster and potential burns to the skin. Keep pot handles turned away from you, and that way, you are less likely to collide with the handles.
Never Leave The Kitchen Unattended
The kitchen should never be unattended, not even for one minute. It takes seconds for something to catch fire or to start smoking up the kitchen and causing that high-pitched ringing of the smoke alarm. If you’re expecting to get a phone call or need to answer the door, then either switch off all gas-lit flames and anything electronic or get another member of the household to take over or to answer the door. It’s certainly not worth the risk, and if anything, it’s something that will only hold up your cooking process for a few minutes anyway.
Avoid Any Distractractions
Distractions are what cause injuries, and you want to be careful with anything around you that might cause you to be distracted. Try to avoid watching anything whilst cooking and if you need entertainment then listening to the radio won’t be as bad. Keep your focus on the cooking at all time, and again, if a distraction is taking over your concentration, then make sure to switch everything off to focus on what is asking for your attention. Whether that’s a phone call or a child wanting attention.
Keeping you and your family safe in the kitchen is important, and it really only takes seconds for something to go drastically wrong. Keep an extra eye when children want to help or are wandering around. Avoid distractions where possible, and take your time when cooking in the kitchen.
